LABUAN:Zuraidah Abd Wahid and Kelvin Koh Kenny did Tiara Labuan Hotel proud by bringing home the gold medal for blackbox hot cooking and Nescafe tarik from the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta competition held in Kota Kinabalu recently..
In the commis-demi professional class competition where participants had to prepare and present, within 60 minutes, a dish from ingredients that were unveiled only during the competition, Zuraidah beat over 20 others with the highest total score of 95 points, given for miss-en-place and cleanliness, correct professional preparation, arrangement and presentation/innovation and taste.
“I feel this win is my reward to my mentor, the hotel’s executive Chef, Sunny Kok, who has given me the opportunity and coached me in what I know about cooking today. It’s my payback to Tiara”, said Zuraidah, the petite 34-year-old mother of 2 teenagers, who has been with Tiara for five years.
Kok, who has clocked over 40 years of culinary experience commented, “It’s indeed very heartening to see how Zuraidah who had successfully worked her way up with us in the kitchen, starting without any formal hospitality industry training, could grab gold in the statewide contest. It’s a testament of her commitment, talent and responsibility”.
Meanwhile, banquet supervisor Kelvin’s gold medal from the Nescafe tarik show display contest, that saw 16 participants, came as a big surprise to himself.
“It’s my first time in a competition and when my name was not announced in the diploma, 3rd and 2nd placing, I assumed I was going home empty handed”, he said
When asked what his winning secret was, the soft-spoken 24-year-old shyly smiled, and, a work colleague who was at the scene chipped in that Kelvin’s movements and showmanship that integrated very well with his choice of dangdut music was outstanding and very impressive.
In the two-day fiesta on 24th and 25th October co-organized by Malaysia Association Hotel, Sabah/Labuan Chapter and Asian Tourism Institute that saw a record-breaking registration of 233 hotels and 70 colleges, Tiara’s delegation of eleven also brought home two silvers, one by Rebiah Sami for table setting and the other by Muhammad Syafiq Medil for bartender flair.
In the bag were also four bronze medals won by the team of Ratna Lair and Nur Syaza Jefry for Decorated Dummy Wedding Cake, Welter Mika Pangerian for bartender flair, Andrew Kaya Dawat for Nescafe tarik and Dy Rahimah Bt Kurus for seafood platter
Two Diplomas were also won. Mohd Suffindi Mat Bahir received one for table setting while Redeldino Yadun won another for professional bed making.
“I’m glad that Tiara, the only representative from Labuan, participated in the event because it’s good to make the presence of the island felt in Sabah, since we are geographically quite isolated from the mainstream of tourism activities”, said Carrol Wong the hotel manager.
